Katharine Spilker (b. 1994), grew up in Washington state and currently lives in Bellingham, WA

Artist Statement:

Katharine’s studio practice is focused on exploring unexpected relationships between materials. The attention toward relational dynamics in their work is centered on the notion of “two-ness,” or how we are able to exist and situate ourselves within polarities. Although it is constantly in flux, they understands this universal “two-ness” as the experience of finding ourselves both in and out, attached and disconnected, supported and falling—the kinds of dualities that saturate our very human experiences, that rub up closely against the unsettling graininess of desire, memory, and power. Katharine wants wants their work to inhabit this space, to push back the corners of these nuances and make them feel tangible within form. They use materials that are mutable and invite adaptability—fabric, plaster, clay, ink, paper, wax—that when placed together, interact with one another intimately and unexpectedly.
